Building the digital operating system for African savings groups.
Preserving the cultural traditions that make these groups work. Eliminating the risks that hurt them.
Why we exist
11 million South Africans participate in 800,000+ stokvels, contributing an estimated R50 billion every year. These informal savings groups are a cornerstone of township and rural financial life.
But they run on notebooks, WhatsApp groups, and trust alone.
Members have no way to verify contributions were recorded correctly. Treasurers spend hours on manual admin. When someone receives their payout early and then disappears, the group loses money with no recourse. And despite managing R50 billion collectively, these groups are invisible to banks, insurers, and merchants.
KEZUMA was built to change that.
What we do
KEZUMA is a digital platform that preserves the culture of African savings groups while eliminating the risk that plagues them.
Secure Rotation™
A software mechanism that keeps the psychological appeal of "your turn" while making default economically infeasible. Rotations unlock only when future obligations are fully secured.
The governance layer
Every action is recorded with a timestamp, authorized centrally, audited with before/after state changes, and notified to affected members.
The relationship graph
Structured data on who's in which group, who pays on time, and how communities organize — the infrastructure for the marketplace and financial products that come next.
What makes KEZUMA different
| Traditional stokvel apps | KEZUMA |
|---|---|
| Digital ledger only | Secure Rotation™ mechanism |
| Trust-based enforcement | Economic enforcement |
| Holds money | Never holds money |
| Requires financial services license | Operates as software platform |
| No risk allocation | Risk allocated per member |
| South African focus | Pan-African focus |
KEZUMA never holds, moves, or invests money. It's a ledger, not a wallet. This is what keeps the platform outside the Banks Act perimeter — and allows us to focus entirely on the software layer that makes savings groups work.
Who this is for
Collects contributions, keeps the records, hates chasing payments and dealing with disputes.
Contributes monthly. Wants to know their money was recorded correctly and their turn is coming.
Makes the rules, resolves disputes. Currently can't enforce anything — everything is on trust.
Our values
- Trust is earned, not assumed. Every action is auditable. Every balance is verifiable.
- Money stays with the group. We never hold it. We never move it. We only record it.
- Preserve, don't replace. We don't try to make stokvels into something they're not. We make them better.
- Africa-first. Built for load-shedding, cheap Android phones, cash-based communities, multilingual users.
- Transparency is the product. Trust isn't a feature — it's the whole point.
Where we're heading
In five years, KEZUMA aims to serve 500,000 active groups across 8 African countries, with R50 billion in annual contribution volume flowing through the platform.
We're starting with South African stokvels. Next: chamas in Kenya, susu in Ghana, ajo and esusu in Nigeria, equb in Ethiopia, mukando in Zimbabwe, and more.
KEZUMA is a product of AhostPal Web (Pty) Ltd, a South African registered company.
